I’ve tried many screen recorders and ways of recording my daily actions on the PC/laptop. VLC (VideoLAN Player), Camtasia…you name it. What is Grammarly?

Grammarly is an app or extension for your browser that checks your grammar, spelling, plagiarism, and more in real-time on a number of different platforms, including Microsoft Word, WordPress, Facebook, and more.

This grammar app is actually coined as being your “Free Grammar Assistant.”

Getting Started and Security

Grammarly checks your writing against its database of content and style errors as well as anonymously collected data from its daily active users. The downside of this real-time model is that Grammarly requires an internet connection to work. In use, Grammarly underlines critical mistakes in red (spelling and basic grammar), and advanced errors in yellow (style and best practices), though the latter capability is limited to premium users. Hovering over any of the indicated words or phrases brings up the option to fix the error directly or read a more detailed explanation of the mistake.

I appreciate the descriptions’ clear language and use of sample sentences to illustrate mistakes. It’s more detailed than what you get with the built-in grammar checkers of both Google Docs and Office 365. I also find the error count that Grammarly adds at the bottom of every document to be an efficient way of showing how much editing work I have left.

Improving Grammar (Almost) Everywhere
Grammarly costs $29.95 per month, $59.95 per quarter, or $139.95 per year. If this price seems high, know that Grammarly frequently offers subscription discounts. For the price of entry, you get customized checks for different document types, a plagiarism filter, and a function to help diversify your vocabulary, among other extras. The latest feature for premium subscribers is a consistency check in the Grammarly Editor desktop application, which we discuss in a later section. Grammarly also offers a limited free version that checks for critical spelling and grammar errors. Grammarly’s Business tier costs $15 per member per month and is billed on an annual basis.

Grammarly works on Chrome, Safari and Firefox. One of the factors that make Grammarly the best choice for an online grammar checker is how easy it is to use on different web apps and even in Microsoft Word. Unlike other grammar checkers, the application isn’t intrusive, and it appears in texts boxes online. Many of the other programs I evaluated made it hard to accurately identify the problem text, but Grammarly’s red underlining is easy to see and clearly marks where the error is.

When you’re in a text box, you need to click an icon at the bottom to get Grammarly to pop up so you can see details about corrections that need to be made. The site then redirects you to a suite where you can read the text in your email or message with more details and helpful input from the checker. There’s a short lag while the software analyzes your content, and it adds a few extra steps to your writing process. However, Grammarly’s helpful and correct suggestions trump the slight delay.

Firefox and Google Chrome are two of the most popular and widely used browsers in the world. They’re both solid choices for browsing the web, with excellent add-on libraries, clean user interfaces and great performance.

Interestingly, Mozilla – the company behind the Firefox browser.

Security

With Firefox retaking the lead, it’s time to have a look at what kind of security each browser offers. We’ll be taking a look at pop-up and ad blockers — whether they’re built-in or available as extensions, safe browsing databases or unsecure connection warnings — and how well the browsers protect your login info, as well as their update frequency.

Firefox
Firefox comes with a built-in pop-up blocker, but no ad-block. However, you can choose from a multitude of options among the large library of Firefox add-ons, including some of our best pop-up blockers.

Chrome also protects your passwords well, requiring your device’s system credentials to access them.

User Interface

Mozilla has come a long way in redesigning its user interface else there was a time I couldn’t use the browser as it was pretty difficult to figure out how to locate bookmarks etc. All that is changed now. Google Chrome too has changed a lot in the past few years, but it still lacks ease of navigation. It has three vertical dots that open a menu to let users access other options and actions such as Casting any Chrome tab to TV or any other device. Same way, it has an option saying More Tools that contain some other features.

In other words, one has to search the extensive menu for getting work done in Google Chrome. There is no way to customize the looks of Chrome. With Firefox, everything is visible on screen, and it uses three bars to indicate the menu – which is more identifiable. Plus, the Customize option lets you arrange, add, remove, and rearrange screen components of Firefox browser so you can keep commands handy.

Privacy

It’s time to decide this competitive battle, and it all comes down to this final round on privacy. We’ll be looking at the track record and reliability of each company, their privacy policies and any built-in privacy features, like tracking protections, VPNs or proxies.

Firefox
Firefox is great with privacy. The company is a nonprofit and doesn’t derive any revenue from ads, which means it’s much easier to trust what Firefox says about protecting your data.

Mozilla’s privacy policy clearly lays out what information it collects and what it is or isn’t used for, as well as that it never sells or gives your data to third parties for any reason.

Google Chrome
Privacy is probably Chrome’s biggest weakness as a browser. Google is well known for collecting all the data it can on its users, and its entire business model is based on using that data to generate revenue through ads.

Summary

The main factors for adopting only one of these browsers depends upon how they are intended to use. Suppose a person uses multiple monitors and wants to cast different tabs to different monitors, the person will use Google Chrome rather than searching for a similar extension for Firefox. Similarly, if a YouTuber uses VIDIQ or some Chrome-only extension for analysis of videos, he or she will have to use Chrome. Otherwise, Firefox is easier to operate.

Features

A version is available for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, iOS, Windows RT, Windows Phone 8 and even Blackberry. And, it supports web-based control, for those operating systems not listed that support a browser.

Admittedly some of those options are remarkably niche, but it should cover most business environments irrespective of their diverse system choices.

What TeamViewer offers is a remote access solution that can be expanded to include more than just two people working on a computer, to provide an alternative to physical meetings and brainstorming sessions.

Installation on the PC, for both the host and guest systems, usually requires the installation of a small (23Mb) application. You can run it without installation if required.

As part of the install, you are asked if you want to add the TeamViewer printer driver, for remote printing, use the TeamViewer VPN for extra security, and interface with Microsoft Outlook.

To make all this work as intended, you also need to sign up at TeamViewer, something they curiously fail to mention when you download the app.

Once you have that, and the app installed at both ends, you can establish a link and access the remote computer much like you would if sat at it.

Interface

The interface of the remote connection, like so many of these tools, has been influenced by Microsoft Remote Desktop. As it provides a centrally placed control bar from where you can access all the actions you might need while connected to a remote computer.

On the remote system, a small taskbar window pops up that enables anyone at the computer to get to some of the tools, like chat and annotation.

It also informs them who is controlling their computer, should they need confirmation.

Alongside the application is a web portal where all the activity on the account is logged for reporting, and a list of all the registered endpoints can be maintained here.

Like the installable software tools, the web portal has a very clean and easily understandable design, with menus on the left and information panels on the right.

The changes introduced by Microsoft Office 2010 are many and quite striking.
